Sinopsis

Acaba de amanecer en Signal (Wyoming); Ennis Del Mar y Jack Twist se conocen mientras hacen cola para pedir trabajo a Joe Aguirre, el ranchero del pueblo. El mundo de Ennis y de Jack está cambiando con rapidez, sin embargo, parece no evolucionar. Ambos jóvenes tienen muy claro el futuro que desean: conseguir un trabajo fijo, casarse y tener hijos.




Sin embargo, algo en su interior les hace buscar algo más. Joe Aguirre les manda de pastores a la majestuosa Brokeback Mountain y, poco a poco, lo que empieza como amistad se convierte en algo más profundo. A finales de verano, no queda más remedio que bajar de la montaña y separarse. Ennis se queda en Wyoming y se casa con Alma, su novia de siempre, con la que tendrá dos hijas mientras se gana la vida a duras penas.

Jack ha vuelto a Tejas y enamora a Lureen Newsome, la reina del rodeo. Se casan, tienen un hijo y Jack trabaja en los negocios del padre de su mujer. Transcurren cuatro años. Un buen día, Ennis recibe una postal de Jack que viene a Wyoming. Ennis le espera impaciente y, cuando por fin llega, les basta un segundo para darse cuenta de que el cariño que sienten el uno por el otro ha aumentado con el tiempo.

En los años siguientes, Ennis y Jack luchan por su unión secreta. Se ven varias veces al año, pero cuando no están juntos, se enfrentan a la eterna cuestión de la fidelidad, de la entrega y de la confianza. La única constante en su vida es una fuerza de la naturaleza, el amor.

• Dirige el taiwanés Ang Lee (Pingtung, Taiwan, 1954), que nació y creció en Taiwán. Llegó a Estados Unidos en 1978 donde estudió Bellas Artes, especializándose en Teatro, en la Universidad de Illinois.

Posteriormente se trasladó a Nueva York donde hizo un máster en Producción Cinematográfica en la Universidad de Nueva York. Su corto Fine Line recibió el Premio al Mejor Director y al Mejor Corto en el Festival de Cine de la Universidad de Nueva York. . • El guión es de Larry McMurtry y Diana Ossana. Larry McMurtry ganó el Pulitzer en 1986 por la novela Paloma solitaria y ha escrito más de 40 libros entre novelas y ensayos (su novela Última sesión fue llevada al cine por Peter Bogdanovich con el título La última película). Empezó a colaborar con Diana Ossana en 1992. Desde entonces, han co-escrito dos novelas.

















• Se basa en el relato Brokeback Mountain, de Annie Proulx, publicado en la revista The New Yorker en 1997. Entre otros premios, el relato ganó un National Magazine. Posteriormente fue publicado en la colección de relatos de la autora En terreno vedado: historias de Wyoming. En 1994 ganó el Pulitzer por su novela Atando cabos. Periodista de profesión, comenzó su carrera literaria a los 50 años de edad.

• La guionista Diana Ossana estaba en octubre de 1997 en Tejas con Larry McMurtry y otros amigos. Uno de ellos le dio el número de The New Yorker en el que se había publicado el relato de Annie Proulx. A partir de las dos terceras partes de la historia, empezó a llorar y no paró hasta el final. Me quedé asombrada. Agotada emocionalmente, me quedé dormida. Al día siguiente, volvió a leerlo para saber si le afectaba tanto a la luz del día. El efecto fue aún más profundo. Le dio la revista a Larry McMurtry y le pidió que lo leyera.

• Ambos escribieron una carta a Annie Proulx en la que le pedían que les diera la primera opción de compra para adaptar el relato para un guión. Contestó afirmativamente y compraron la la opción con dinero de su bolsillo. Empezaron a escribir y tres meses después, a finales de 1997, ya tenían el guión. Durante siete años intentaron conseguir que lo produjeran. Se apuntaron varios directores; muchos actores querían trabajar en la película, pero nadie estaba dispuesto a comprometerse. Por fin, a finales de 2003, la productora Focus y Ang Lee se involucraron de lleno en el proyecto.

• El director de fotografía es Rodrigo Prieto (Looking for Fidel, Alejandro Magno, 21 gramos, La última noche, Comandante, Frida, 8 millas, Pecado original, Amores perros, Comandante, Alejandro Magno) y la banda sonora está compuesta por Gustavo Santaolalla (Diarios de motocicleta, 21 gramos, 11.09.01, Amores perros).

When in early 2006 Heath Ledger was feted worldwide for his performance in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, most reviewers expressed surprise that the young Australian was capable of such stirring efforts. After all, wasn't he just the pretty boy who'd sung, dance and smirked his way through the teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You? Hadn't he stared smugly down from the posters of hip mediaeval comedy A Knight's Tale, posters which loudly boasted "He will rock you"? Wasn't he, for God's sake, in Home And Away?

Perhaps the reviewers should not have been so taken aback. Ledger had already shown great promise with his brief but telling appearance in the Oscar-winning Monster's Ball. Moreover, hugely adventurous and artistically ambitious, he'd proved from an early age to be a fledgling Renaissance Man, a cultural sponge, sucking up the wisdom of those older and more experienced than himself, and he'd continued this practice in his film career, drawing on the likes of Bryan Brown, Mel Gibson, Roland Emmerich, Billy Bob Thornton, Terry Gilliam and Geoffrey Rush, to say nothing of a string of girlfriends considerably his senior in age. Like Johnny Depp before him, he'd made a conscious decision to escape the heart-throb image and worked hard to become more a substantial actor. If there was anything surprising to his story, it was simply that he'd succeeded so quickly.

He was born Heath Andrew Ledger on the 4th of April, 1979, at the Subiaco Hospital in Perth, Western Australia. The Ledger name was well-known in Perth, the family having run a foundry that provided much of the raw material for the famous Perth to Kalgoorlie Pipeline, which ran 557 kilometres east out into the desert and, beginning to pump back in 1903, first supplied the Western Australian goldfields and now served over 100,000 people and 6 million sheep in 44,000 square miles. The Sir Frank Ledger Charitable Trust, named after Heath's great-grandfather, was renowned for granting funds to the area's universities, paying for visiting lecturers and scholarships for gifted students.

Jake Gyllenhaal has starred opposite several of today's most respected actors such as Dustin Hoffman, Laura Dern, Holly Hunter, Chris Cooper, John C. Reilly and Susan Sarandon.

Gyllenhaal (pronounced Jill-en-hall) stars in the screen adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Proof" for director John Madden. The film, due in December, also stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Anthony Hopkins. He also landed the coveted role of "Jack" in the film adaptation of "Broken Mountain," which chronicles an intense relationship between two Wyoming stockmen. Directed by Ang Lee, the film costars Heath Ledger and goes into production this summer.

Gyllenhaal was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead in the critically acclaimed "Donnie Darko." A favorite at the Sundance Film Festival, the film combines elements of mystical fantasy and science fiction with teenage romance. Directed by Richard Kelly, "Donnie Darko" costars Drew Barrymore, Jena Malone and Noah Wyle.

He starred in another Sundance favorite in 2002, Fox Searchlight's "The Good Girl," which received four 2003 Independent Spirit Award nominations. In the dark comedy, he portrays a young man who falls in love and has a torrid affair with a married woman, played by Jennifer Aniston. The film is directed by Miguel Arteta, and also stars John C. Reilly, Zooey Deschanel, and Catherine O' Hara. The film was distributed by Fox Searchlight.

In fall 2002, he starred in "Moonlight Mile," written and directed by Brad Silberling. Set in New England in the early 70s, the unlikely love story revolves around a young man who finds himself lingering in the family home of his fiancée, after her untimely death. While grieving along with her parents, played by Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon, he gets drawn into legal issues presented by a district attorney (Holly Hunter) seeking justice for the family, and finds himself falling in love with another woman against his own best intentions.

Gyllenhaal's stage debut was a starring role in the London production of Kenneth Lonergan's revival of "This Is Our Youth." The play, which was a critical sensation on Broadway, ran for eight weeks in London's West End. He portrayed a rich kid who spends a decadent weekend stealing, dealing, and consuming drugs along side Hayden Christensen and Anna Paquin. For the role, Gyllenhaal received an Evening Standard Theater Award in the category of Outstanding Newcomer.

His film credits also include "Lovely and Amazing," a comedy starring Catherine Keener and Brenda Blethyn. Gyllenhaal starred in the romantic comedy "Bubble Boy," the story of a young man's adventure outside the confines of his bubble as he goes after the woman he loves before she marries the wrong man.

He received critical accolades for his performance in the film "October Sky," directed by Joe Johnston. The film tells the triumphant story of Homer Hickman, Jr. (Gyllenhaal), a gifted high school student in rural West Virginia, who seemed destined to repeat his father's harsh life in the coal mines until he turned his attention upward to the skies.
